Esperanto is 100%-- but is Cherokee??

today-- ask ANY person who speaks ESPERANTO if they have a membership card to UEA (the World Esperanto Association).

If they do have a membership-- next-- ask nicely--
ask if you can see their card.

Look at it closely.

Notice there is NO English on it at all. It is 100% in Esperanto

DID YOU KNOW?

Esperanto, as a language, has only existed for 128 years.
Today, there are between 100,000 and 2,000,000 people worldwide who fluently or actively speak Esperanto, including perhaps 1,000 native speakers who learned Esperanto from birth.

If the Esperanto folks can use Esperanto- why can't the Cherokee cards be in Cherokee?
Sure, provide English too but put it in Cherokee first.

Just sayin'

Learn cherokee at the Library!

also,
a desktop computer version of the program exists, as well as an app version for iPhone and Android smart phones.
The language program is free to people if their library has access to it.

Most Basic piece...

heard at the water cooler:

"given the chance to use the language on the most basic item of Cherokee identity, the tribal card, the opportunity is missed" BW

There are many groups, organizations and 501c3's that claim to be Cherokee.

Do their membership cards have Cherokee on them?

What are we putting on this most basic item of identity?
Not just the name of the card-- but the name of the PERSON on the card-- is that also in Cherokee?

Having Cherokee on an ID card is not much-- but
it is a start.
as a concession,
Sure, lets put BOTH English and Cherokee but let us get the Cherokee on there.

Whether its in Syllabary, like I will use when I sign this blog with, or in Phonetics.
But lets use Cherokee on the basic ID card if we are going to try to claim to be Cherokee

Without your language-- you are not Cherokee.

Seeing Cherokee words.....

The addition of Cherokee Syllabary to sign posts / street signs - has received a small bit of attention.
I agree it needed to be done.
[however I wish the syllabary was the larger on the signs and the English was the smaller and below the syllabary]

The idea is that we need to see MORE uses of Cherokee Syllabary.
I recently was handed a card from a federally recognized Cherokee person.
Very little on the card would indicate this person was Cherokee.
Oh yes, it identified the tribe, their enrollment, and their name but it was ALL IN ENGLISH!
None of the important stuff was written in Cherokee syllabary; it was ALL in ENGLISH!

If this language is going to thrive and not just survive or barely make it, then EVERYTHING needs to prominently display Cherokee syllabary.

Sure, ok, as a concession, translate it somewhere in English, but put the PRIMARY information on your membership cards in SYLLABARY at least!

Cherokee language needs to move from the 'sometimes' used status it has been relegated to and return to a position of prominent use if it is to thrive.

Its not enough for a few places and people to use it.  Everyone needs to get involved.

a quick way you can help?  write Facebook and demand they allow the transliteration of English profile names into Cherokee Syllabary

Cherokee language in the news TODAY

its in the AP news coverage today-- 2 whole articles-- (see below for link to one)
but--- if you cannot let the kids write their names in cherokee on Facebook--- will they keep using it????

This is important-- and it is not up to the children to fight this battle.
We must prepare the way for them.

Reviving Language CAN be done! we can DO this!

Did you know?

28 years ago Hawaii had only 50 fluent speakers, but today they have more than 10,000 fluent speakers-- HOW did they do this? The state’s education system supports immersion programs to teach the language throughout school.

“Their language and culture is taught in all grade levels, and into college and university programs—from early childhood education to PhD,” says the press release. “They now have more than 10,000 fluent Hawaiian speakers.”

How can we help increase the use of Cherokee as a language?

Get ready to celebrate!

March 31---- I am asking EVERYONE to commemorate National Indigenous Languages Day--

March 31 is National Aboriginal Languages Day in Canada. Even if you are not Canadian you can still celebrate!

The day has been celebrated by Indigenous Peoples since 1993 as a way to honor the strength and endurance of aboriginal languages and cultures.

Please-- even if you are NOT Canadian-- lets remember the importance of the heart languages of the native people of this continent and let us all Celebrate National Aboriginal Languages Day! You have 2 weeks to get ready!

Plan an event-- get others in your community involved- learn a new word

or try this-- support the effort to get Facebook to allow profile names in Cherokee-- change YOUR profile name to Cherokee syllabary!

The Billboard in Cherokee, NC indicates there are only 218 Cherokee speakers left in western North Carolina. Help us increase that number!

Why Syllabary/ Cherokee Should be allowed as a Profile name

Facebook is currently challenging facebook users on a case by case basis IF their names are written using Cherokee Syllabary. ======================================================= In my case, even though I have provided the 2 forms of id that the Facebook website lists as acceptable proof of use of an authentic name, I have not been allowed back into Facebook and both my account and my husband's have been deleted. ======================================================== My argument with Facebook has gone beyond proof of ID and it is my understanding that this is why we have not been allowed back in even after providing the requisite PROOF of identity. (to see what FB claims to accept- but they are not following their own post-- see this site https://www.facebook.com/help/159096464162185 and notice their promise to delete your information after viewing- you have no way to verify they do that but we sent ours in anyway) ======================================================== My argument with facebook boils down to this-- PEOPLE should be ALLOWED to write their legal names USING Cherokee Syllabary rather than English without having to have matching id (even though I did have that and did provide it) but that it should just need to match transliteration from the Sequoyah syllabary chart to the English Alphabet. Facebook disagreed and then locked me out, even after providing 2 forms of ID as per their site listed above. ========================================================== Some folks have told me to "give up" and just "go along with it" and "just use your English Name" but I counter with "WHY??" why do I need to do that? I don't actually NEED Facebook-- but if Facebook does NOT allow profiles in the Cherokee language, then WHY in the WORLD would I want to support their genocide of the language? ========================================================== and folks-- that is what it is-- lets call it what it really is-- if one cannot use a language-- if it ceases to be used- it dies- it is dead- it is gone-- and what facebook is doing is murdering the language every bit as effectively as the boarding schools attempted in the past few centuries and even more effectively-- ========================================================= how are we going to convince the next generation of speakers that the language is valid and viable in this century if they cannot even write their names in the language on social media sites like facebook?

Use of Cherokee Syllabary on Social Media sites

If a LANGUAGE is NOT used-- what happens? it DIES! We MUST use the language EVERYWHERE we possibly can-- and push to be allowed to use it even more Especially on social media sites-- if it is to not just survive but to also THRIVE! --------------------------------- This battle to use Cherokee Syllabary is real. I believe it will be pivotal in whether or not this current generation and perhaps even the next generation will be able to use syllabary on social media sites. --------------------------------- Try this-- change YOUR Facebook AND ALL your social media site profiles to use SYLLABARY for your name INSTEAD OF English letters. This will promote the languge. ===== It is NOT enough for FB to "allow" syllabary in posts! it MUST also "allow" it as a profile name if this language is to thrive! --------------------------- =======PSSSST! need help changing how you write your name from English into Cherokee? check this out http://www.native-languages.org/cherokee_names.htm ======= By the way, Apparently, Facebook does not believe there are enough Cherokee folks who care about the language enough to actually use it in their names. --------------------------- Although FB is a private company, its SHARES are traded PUBLICLY and negative media attention is something the FB folks would like to AVOID-- but they just DO NOT BELIEVE there are enough of us wanting to USE CHEROKEE for them to worry about us doing anything. --------------------------- I am working on getting a "grass roots" response to the idea FB has that Cherokee Syllabary is --not a "real" language --not used --------------------------- What we need to do / how everyone can help advance the use of Cherokee in Social Media: --------------------------- -- every organization that claims to be Cherokee in any form or fashion (whether a club, professional group, state recognized group, or a federal recognized group) needs to do three things (in this order): --------------------------- 1st--each entity needs to issue each member an id card with the member's name written in Cherokee Syllabary- whether its their legal name transliterated or whether it is their "used" name- does not matter but it must be a name that will identify them personally (why? because FB claims they will honor membership cards as a form of id IF it has the DOB (date of birth) AND if combined with a subscription label that shows the matching name) --------------------------- 2nd-- each entity needs to send MAIL thru the USPS with their member's name in syllabary on the top address line -- the rest of the address can and should be in English but the name on the mail must match the ID card in step one above (why? because fb claims they will accept a subscription label as a form of id if combined with a membership ID that also matches the name) --------------------------- Step 3-- to be completed ONLY when the first 2 above steps are taken-- each member of each entity should log onto Social media, switch their name to Syllabary-- and be prepared to upload a scanned JPEG format of the 2 above forms of ID to the social media site --------------------------- This battle to use Cherokee Syllabary is real. I believe it will be pivotal in whether or not this current generation and perhaps even the next generation will be able to use syllabary on social media sites. --------------------------- The pressure brought to bear on Facebook should work. --------------------------- As I stated at the beginning, although FB is a private company, its SHARES are traded PUBLICLY and negative media attention is something the FB folks would like to AVOID-- but they just DO NOT BELIEVE there are enough of us wanting to USE CHEROKEE for them to worry about us doing--------------------------- anything. Let's prove the social media sites wrong about that. --------------------------- Sgi! Gvyalielitsehi! ᏦᎭᎾ ᏣᏑᏰᏓ ᎻᎩᏍ ᏫᏍ
